Sometimes life challenges us, and not always in a positive way. How we face those challenges not only defines us, but also our impact on the world.
When I developed Leadership Zen as a personal development philosophy, the original intent was always to change the world, one life at a time. Over time though, I realized this was much more than a tag line. It was indeed a mission, and what I wanted to bring to life. Part of it was legacy – not selfishly just something I could leave to my kids that said I made an impact. Most of it was because I really do want to help people live better lives and ultimately produce the kind of positivity that we celebrate every day at Coaching by Zen.
That’s awesome DNA for a company, but it means so much more to me as an individual. I have learned that it is really who I am. They always say when life throws you lemons, make lemonade. While lemonade is a cool and refreshing drink, it is a moment in time and not very permanent. It quenches your thirst. On the other hand, facing adversity or even a down day tests us to find out what we are really made of. It helps define our purpose, and how we display that helps others to see its integrity within you. It creates a thirst to bring it to life.
Working through some recent challenges of my own, I have found myself returning to that purpose. We have a brand and we have a company. We also have 25 people who share a common vision and desire to help others succeed. It isn’t my role to make that happen. Instead I have found that in my hiring process I apparently actively and subconsciously look for those qualities in a team that works together, almost like a family or a community to get the job done. What’s more, 25 people across the country, who have never met in person, have embraced that and each other to create a cohesion I have rarely seen elsewhere. That is living your purpose.
Mission should drive you and your actions. It is an immediate look into your authenticity and it is contagious. We can’t ignore purpose to meet results. Our results must come from our purpose, our vision and our mission. You cannot lead, you cannot teach, and you cannot coach without it. People will know.
Normally I write about the reader, and how to lead more meaningful and fulfilled lives. Today I do this by celebrating the leaders and the coaches on our team. I feel confident in what we are going to do in the coming months, and I can honestly say the impact you are making on me personally has been profound. You are helping me to realize the integrity of my own purpose, and in adopting it as yours, we can spread a little positivity in the world. Thank you for that, each one of you.
But you don’t have to be part of our organization to reap the rewards of such a powerful concept. Just be. Find out what drives and motivates you. Show the change you want to see in the world by actively being that change and living it every day. Don’t make lemonade when life challenges you. Make a choice to remain true to your nature.
